Bio Sensor - Overview

The Bio Sensor is a N64 controller accessory to measure the player's heart rate giving feedback to the game. It was only released in Japan, and so was the only game supporting it, Tetris 64.

Since I acquired one to check if it would work with my N64 to USB adapter project when combined with my mupen64plus/Project 64 plugin, I thought it would be nice to post a few pictures here, but also to document the communication protocol between the game and the sensor.

I wonder, will we one day get to see a N64 homebrew game supporting the Bio Sensor?

Here are pictures of various surfaces of the box accompanied by an english translation.

The sensor clip efficiently measures the player's heart reate.

You try to beat the game in pounding excitement! Your heart rate influences the game!
Note: The box has two identical sides.

Back

The bio sensor peripheral attaches to a Nintendo 64 controller to relay the player's heart rate measured by a sensor clipped to the user's earlobe.

  • This product is only compatible with game software maked as such. For detailed usage use, please refer to the game user guide.
  • This is not a standalone product. A Nintendo 64 system and a compatible game are required.
Warning: This is delicate equipment. Please handle carefully and avoid extreme temperature changes.

The clip

I am not very knowledgeable in the field of biometric sensing. But I think this is an optical sensor using infrared.

The enclosure

The bio sensor is like a controller pak plus a cable...

The circuit board silk screen reads "Biopack". I wonder if this was the intended product name until a marketing department decided otherwise...

Protocol

If you were hoping for something complicated and interesting, you will be disappointed (I was). According to the communication log I recorded with Tetris 64 and the Bio sensor, the game does not even write to the controller expansion port. The game simply reads 32-byte blocks from address 0xC000 at a constant interval. The bytes returned are either 0x00 or 0x03. Between heart beats, a value of 0x03 is read. During a pulse, a value of 0x00 is read.

Here is an example of the values returned:

N64 games:

As far as I know, Tetris 64 is the only game supporting the Bio Sensor. Here is the test screen with a sensor present:

Note: This video was recorded using mupen64plus and my raphnetraw direct controller access plugin.

On a PC:

I have added a simple heart rate monitor function to the adapter management tool (command-line interface only).
$ ./gcn64ctl -f --biosensor
Will use device 'N64 to USB v3.4' serial '100154'
